Well once again I have (recklessly I suppose) volunteered for a gig that I know very little about. I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to have a new musical/artistic/literary/whatever adventure, and in this spirit of adventure I’m willing to volunteer for damned near any kind of performance, just to see what the experience is like, as long as it doesn’t require me to take my clothes off.
I had heard from Gail, director of CMEMME, that a Georgian novelist who will be doing a reading at Cornell soon is looking for 1 or 2 accompanying musicians to play some stuff at his reading. I don’t know exactly how he intends this combination of music and reading to work, but in general I’ve always been very interested in combining music and literary reading together (even though many if not most of the examples of this that I have seen have not been very well done), so naturally when Gail mentioned this possibility for the reading and asked for volunteer musicians I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I think Gail probably expected that. I suppose she is by now used to the fact that I am kind of a crazy guy who will immediately volunteer for just about anything that comes up. One other musician from CMEMME, an excellent violinist named Maurice, also volunteered. No one else has expressed an interest so I guess it’s just going to be the two of us. I expect I will be playing percussion.
